Here at Rising Sun we crave the authentic things in life. This is why we often look to workwear of the past for inspiration. There is one iconic worker who had to take lots of abuse and still look rugged and handsome at the end of the day. The Ranch Hand.

Once again, Rising Sun’s Ranch Hand Jacket brings the this rugged charm back to life.

Since we know many of you have been waiting, we are happy to announce them finished just in time for the cold winter weather. This two pocket, pleated jacket, made from our signature brown duck is a timeless piece. We kept the details the same, using tobacco colored contrast duck on the inside of the waist band and the cuffs, and a steel buckle made from bending steel wiring as a back detail.

The Year of the Work Pant

In 1933 Roosevelt resolved to pull this country out of the depression by putting the american people back to work. As part of Roosevelt’s second New Deal he instated several government funded organizations. One of these organizations was the Works Progress Administration, or WPA. Among other things the WPA was devoted to building roads, bridges and parks. Many young men found work during those hard times with the WPA. Today we can still enjoy the results of their hard work.
Below are pictures of some of these young men. Pay close attention to the work pants worn at that time.

Paying homage to the WPA workers, we developed the WPA Work Pant. Although these are a Rising Sun original you can see they are clearly inspired by those depression era work pants of the 1930′s.

Lightning Strikes Twice

We are fortunate to be featured in Lightning Magazine for the second time. They came to our shop in Pasadena to attend the Jeans of the Old West release party and took some photos while they were there. The feature came out in their October 2010 issue.

We had the content translated, and this is what they had to say:

We recently attended a publication event for vintage denim in Pasadena, Los Angeles to investigate and research denim trends and fashionable people in the vintage industry.
“Rising Sun & Co.” is a denim brand and shop that exhibits a truly cool vintage vibe. The shop is located in Old Pasadena, north of Los Angeles City. The streets of Old Pasadena are different than other parts of Los Angeles because the old buildings are still standing which were first built during the early settling of Los Angeles so that Old Pasadena seems like it is lost in time. We first encountered and became enamored with Rising Sun & Co. at “Inspiration”, a significant vintage event in Santa Monica. Mike Hodis, the owner of Rising Sun & Co. is well-versed in vintage collecting and styles, so he invited his friend, the author of a new vintage denim book, to hold a publication event for his new book at Rising Sun’s shop in Old Pasadena. Many people from the vintage industry were present at the event, but we were surprised to find there were more people wearing new denim than vintage denim. Standout styles at the event were the people dressed like workers in 30’s. Suspenders were an accessory worn by many at the event confirming the comeback of their popularity. Rising Sun & Co. has manufactured and released new denim styles that are modeled after 40’s or older styles, and have made an impact on many in the vintage industry because of these attractive designs. Rising Sun & Co. currently use Cone denim from the USA for their line. Future production plans include the release of a new denim line using denim from Okayama, Japan. Denim made in Okayama is highly regarded by the attendees of this publication event.
Rising Sun appears like a vintage shop. The sign in the window matches the atmosphere of the shop. Incidentally, parking in the front is for “Hot Rods Only.” There were a number of hot rods on the day of the event.

Duck Hunt

It’s open season at Rising Sun and the name of the game is “duck”. Just to make sure that we’re not going to offend any bird lovers, duck was the term used to describe canvas in the 1800′s and continues to be used by the people in the know. Brown Duck has been part of Rising Sun since the beginning. It is on our waistband facing and various other iconic trim details which have become our signature and finishing touch to our denim trousers and jackets. Naturally it progressed into various work wear styles such as the ‘Worker’ and the ‘Ranch Hand’ jacket and others to come.

We want to keep you, our loyal customers and fellow supporters, up to date with the goings on about the shop and our fresh, right out of the oven items produced in our Haberdashery on a daily basis. On the menu today we have our favorite fowl, Duck… Bon Appetite!

My Blue Heaven

This is C.R. Russell, who became a Rising Sun customer just recently. He works at the top of the mountain at Heavenly Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, and even though he hasn’t been a patron for long we wanted to highlight his experience so far. Here’s what he had to say:

I had been looking for some durable denim and vests for layering since the temperatures can vary greatly from the base of the mountain to the top. I am also a big fly fisherman who punishes his clothes each season so I really needed something durable but like the vintage style you guys use. I first found out about your company when I ordered a pair of your Canvas Weathered Worker (Miner) Pants from Orvis and then got to looking at your website. I am a big fan of American handcrafted clothing and yours is the best I have seen. Your Orvis Miner pants are just incredible as well as everything else I’ve ordered from you. I have literally worn either the Worker pants or Ride ‘Em jeans with the Indigo vest every day since I got them. I can pretty much guarantee I will be ordering a few other items soon. Thanks again!

Orvis Collection

We are privileged to be a part of a curated collection of American-made garments for Orvis, the outdoor outfitters. Fifteen years ago, Mike was fly-fishing in Alaska wearing an Orvis Wading Jacket, little did he know then; that sometime in the future, his two passions would come together.

We are honored to be presenting these items as a part of the fall collection on their website and in select retail stores.

Our good proprietor Mike Hodis works hard to impress the duck canvas crowd with the latest Duck Ranch Hand Jacket with HBT details.

Details include HBT contrast pocket flap facing and waistband.

Mighty Duck

Spring is in the air and there is no better suited garment for the crafted workwear/outdoor fiend than a Rising Sun Outdoor Vest. This single needle constructed vest is made on our prized black head Singer. It is a little different than other black head single needles out there but we will get into that at a later time.

The Outdoor vest is now available in 2 fabrications. The duck canvas version uses the same fabric on our popular Worker pants. The back panels are made from a special cotton HBT (herringbone twill) we sourced.

The next Outdoor vest now available flips everything around with the front in HBT and the back in duck canvas.

Watch out for the sequel to our Mighty Duck post in which we will feature our Ranch Hand duck jacket.

For Japan, With Love

We have been swamped with production for stores carrying Rising Sun in Japan where we are now more popular than ever. Here we have pictures showing the fruits of our labor.

The details-focused Blacksmith jean took up the lion’s share of our time. Working with antique sewing machines require care, finesse, and lots of patience. The results make the extra energy we spend very much worthwhile.

The Worker jean continues to be a big hit. Here we have the patches drying after the Made in USA shield stamp was applied.
